Enjoying the new season of Kim Possible .... Patiently waiting for the remaining episodes of Ghost Hunters and Danny Phantom to be aired here. (Hey, that's pretty funny- I wonder if the TAPS guys like DP.)
Been a huge Transformer fan forever, G1 mostly, mainly based on the original story and understanding. These mechanoids accidentally crash landed on earth in search of energy, taking the forms of the mechanical here to better blend on this world, not knowing the metallic forms on this planet were not the dominate ones, and they were as surprised to the human presence, as we were to theirs.
Sadly, I'm not sure how to feel about the live action Movie....before I get my head bitten off, this isn't another tired "Megatron should be a gun" rant... but, so far, it feels like since Sony aquired the Transformer name, they know it is a goldmine, so they are just looking to make a buck and don't care about the history behind the name.
Unlike how Sam Raimi knew the Spiderman characters and respected the outcome of the movie, this feels like just "Get any people together who will work for the money we will pay" and who cares what kind of story and things we use.
Things that bug me about the live action movie are:
Why do all the Transformers look like James Cameron's anorexic aliens wearing robot suits?? I mean, I'm not expecting them to be big and clunky as depicted in the animated series, but the excess amount of chrome, pistons and wires that stick out everywhere is kinda overkill.... BECAUSE..
These robots are supposed to be zillions of years ahead of us humans in technology and have been at war forever, yet they look like they were created by 15 year olds for "robot rumble"....very basic raw exoskeleton, with no outer battle ready protective armor plating, and then there's the "chicken feet." We kinda expected that look for The Terminator in 1984... but this is 2007, we have alot more artistic freedom of belief today, plus the cgi to pull it off.
Alot of people knock the original G1 forms for disappearing/ reappearing pieces that appear from one mode to the other, and that "will never fly in a live setting", but so far, that's all I see in the movie versions- these robots hold no characteristics of the vehicle they become and the transformation is soo flippy and foldy like a rubiks cube- even the head pieces shift around.... the robots in the movie shift and fold form so randomly, like any character can be ANY thing. In robot mode, Starscream looks like he can transform into a car or anything mechanical...not a fighter jet. And what exactly is Megatron? Noone knows.. some subsonic made up vehicle.... This kinda feels more like "Transformable Robot creatures from Mars" that can become anything... Not "The Transformers".
I want to know why they couldn't use specs from the believeable Masterpiece and Alternator lines. They are pretty awesome, slick workable figures that are from real cars and jets that could have been models for the updated versions of the memorable characters as real to life actual licensed vehicles, not just a marketing gimmick or unrealistic things we would never see in a live day to day setting.
